Girl's Lives Vol. 1

These three stories are about young girls dealing with difficult life experiences. Despite their setbacks, problems and their youth and inexperience, they overcome these obstacles to grow and mature.

Stone, Tanya Lee. A bad boy can be good for a girl. 2007.

What does this title tell you about the story? Bad boys are bad for girls right; that is why they are bad! Or after loving a bad boy does the girl or girls (because this is a bad boy we are talking about) get smart about boys and learn some life lessons that hopefully do not come at too high a price.

Three girls learn more about men, love, sex and life after falling for a bad boy. What he does to them will make you mad and you might think the girls were stupid for falling for him, but when your bad boy comes along you might have the wherewithal and the knowledge to see right through him after reading A bad boy can be good for a girl.

Anderson, Laurie Halse. Speak. 1999.

Who is the class scapegoat? Is this student misunderstood, angry, sad, happy, frustrated? Melinda has just started high school but the year is going to be difficult and she knows it. She doesn’t speak. And no one at school will speak to her, not even her friends. She is the pariah of the entire school. She was the one who called the police at the end of the summer party and everyone is mad at her. Her reason for calling the police is unknown because she can’t speak of the experience and because she has no one to tell. Her parents are not talking to each other and her friends have abandoned her. It is only through a sympathetic art teacher and the work she does in his class that she works to find her voice.

Friend, Natasha. Perfect. 2004.

Isabelle and Ashley are 13 year old classmates who have never had anything to do with each other. Isabelle and her family are still reeling from the death of her father two years previously and Isabelle and her mother and sister are in many respects avoiding the grief. Ashley is the prettiest and most popular girl in school. They do have one thing in common, they are both bulimic. And both have been sent to the to the same group therapy sessions where Ashley takes Isabelle under her wing and they have sleepovers where the main activity is binging and purging. Isabelle, though, realizes that she is on a path that will consume her entire life if she doesn’t open up about her pain and anger. Read Perfect to discover that nothing is ever perfect but life is still good.
